Happy 2020 to all our preschool families and friends! With our new year comes the beauty of new resolutions, change and the incredible growth that takes place both within and without in our little preschoolers. This semester is always exhilarating, as our little children truly begin to feel like St. Andrew’s is their home away from home. With this comfort, their minds and hearts begin to stretch and grow, while discovering new boundaries. We launched our little ones by exploring the letter W and focusing on the winter season. Whether it was molding winter snowmen out of our homemade play dough, watching our weather, or working hard to paint watermelons while we munched on their juicy sweetness, our little ones were immersed with sensory, tactile and cognitive play. We even learned about winter planting as we dug holes and placed our tiny and giant seeds in the dirt, which we learned will turn into broccoli and carrots and beautiful tulips. K week we focused on all kinds of kindness, marsupials from Australia (such a big, fun word to roll off the tongue for our Littles to learn about) - We painted and cut cotton ball Koalas and Kangaroos, all while learning about helping these very creatures in Australia who are suffering from the fires.
Suffering is a hard word to explain to little preschoolers. But helping the suffering is a very easy one. And helping is one of our favorite words here at St. Andrew’s Preschool. We talk about kindness and helping daily - even hourly - as part of our social/emotional curriculum. We can help our friends to build Lego towers, we can be kind by sharing our coveted Thomas train, we can even help our preschool peers by giving a hug when they get a boo boo. It starts here. There are so many ways in our families, our community and our classrooms to help educate our children about how to be kind and help.
During this very cold season of winter, many families and children in our local area go without food and/or shelter or are needy in other ways. This might be an ideal time to explore opportunities to share kindness in our community with your preschooler. Helping through our St. Andrew’s Church (where we have many programs of kindness) or through numerous other community organizations, might be a wonderful way for families to get involved in exemplifying kindness and help to our little ones.
The last two weeks the children have continued to learn behavioral boundaries as they bounce through the letters N and D. With noodle painting, number counting and dogs, drums and dinosaurs galore, our preschoolers have learned letters and numbers through play, every day. With love, fun and relative curriculum, we continue to help them see the joy and kindness in all things in their little lives.
